Another very satisfying day, this time in nearby Muttenz on the outskirts of Basel for the final stage of this year’s BMC Racing Cup, a high profile MTB event which attracted an incredible world-class field in both the Men’s and Women’s Elite races. The cup races formed part of the programme of the Basel Bike Festival.
The weather was truly appalling throughout the men’s event with continuous heavy rain which only cleared up a little during the women’s race later in the afternoon.
Racing conditions were so bad by this time that the women’s event had to be shortened for safety reasons.
However, none of this succeeded in dampening the spirits of the spectators who were treated to a magnificent display of top class racing throughout the day. It was a grueling and emotional day for the contestants, however, most of whom were utterly exhausted at the finish.
Winner of the Men’s race was Ralph Näf (BMC Mountainbike Racing Team) and Esther Süss (Wheeler-ISX Team) won the Women’s race.
Alessandra Keller, won the Junior Women’s race.
Note added 29th August: 5 days later, Alessandra won Gold in Junior Women’s cross-country race at the World Championships event in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa.
The full results can be found here, and Esther Süss has published an excellent account of the race from her perspective on her website which is well worth reading. There is also a report of the Men’s race on Näf’s website and a very good video on YouTube.
