Summary: Tadesse Abraham and Jane Muia continue their winning streak in Basel.
The Basler Stadtlauf took place in Basel this evening with a record number of participants (9200) despite the freezing conditions.
As expected, Eritrean Tadesse Abraham won the Elite Men’s 7.55km event in 22.09,3 with Bernard Matheka (Kenya) and Simon Tesfay (Eritrea) in second and third place with times of 22.12,4 and 22.20,7 respectively. That makes three wins in a row now for Abraham.
The Elite Women’s race over 5.9km was won for the fifth time running by favourite Jane Muia of Kenya in 19.43,0, followed by Aster Bacha (Canada, 19.44,6) and Swiss long-distance runner Sabine Fischer (Switzerland, 19.59,3).
Local triathlete Nicola Spirig, Olympic gold medalist in 2012 came fourth, fifteen seconds behind Sabine Fischer, her main rival in this year’s Post Cup. Spirig is now just two points ahead of Fischer, so the final stage of the cup – the Zürcher Silvester Lauf on the 15th December – is a mouthwatering prospect.

Summary: Lukas Flückiger wins the second Flückiger-Cross event in Madiswil.
The second edition of the Flückiger-Cross cyclocross event took place today in Madiswil, Switzerland. The winner of the Elite Men’s race was Lukas Flückiger (BMC Racing Team), closely followed by Marcel Wildhaber (Scott-Swisspower MTB Racing Team) and Simon Zahner (EKZ Racing Team), both on the same time. The next three places were taken by Arnaud Grand, Ralph Näf and Julien Absalon (all BMC).
Co-organiser Mathias Flückiger was unfortunately unable to compete owing to a broken arm sustained during training prior to the event, and after the race had finished news filtered out that Andri Frischknecht (Scott Swisspower MTB Racing Team) had broken his collarbone in a fall, on what was his first CX outing.
In a cruel vindication of the old saying that bad things happen in threes (alle schlechten Dinge sind drei?), Ralph Näf reported just three days later that he had injured a calf muscle during training and would have to retire from competition for the rest of the 2013 season.
The full results can be found here and there is a detailed newspaper report (in German) here.
