Summary: Oqubit Berhane and Mona Stockhecke won the Men’s and Womens’ categories at the Augusta Raurica Lauf in Augst today.
The 54th edition of the Augusta Raurica Lauf took place this afternoon in Augst, near Basel in Switzerland, attracting over 250 entrants. Even the atrocious weather couldn’t dampen the spirits of the participants in this classic race.
The 12km event is highly regarded locally and competition is fierce. With an overall height difference of 225m, the spectacular course is quite demanding. It starts off opposite an impressive amphitheatre in the midst of the ruins of the ancient Roman town in the outskirts of Augst. After following the Ergolz river for around 5km, the road climbs steeply up through Fullinsdorf and then back down the hill to the finish.
Unfortunately, today the weather was miserable – dark grey skies with heavy rain and temperatures around 6°C – unpleasant for runners and spectators alike and certainly less than ideal conditions for a course record.
However, despite this setback, the winner of the men’s event Oqubit Berhane of Niederdorf came home in a time of 38:29,7, just short of his record-breaking time of 37:57 set last year.
The fastest woman was accomplished athlete Mona Stockhecke of Zürich with an excellent time of 43:57,7. She was followed by Ahna Lewis who finished in 47:38,2.
