Tour Alsace 2013 Stage 2

As predicted in my last post, today’s 157.6 km stage from Mulhouse to Huningue ended in an exciting mass sprint won by the sensational Australian U23 rider Caleb Ewan.  Full results can be found here.

It was a very hot day in Huningue.  The temperature on the long, straight Rue de Belfort hovered around 30°C and there was very little cloud cover.  Fortunately, the area around the finishing line was well shaded by nearby trees.  The modest crowd waited expectantly for the arrival of the peloton while being entertained by a garrulous compere and a pair of young exotic dancers on the podium.

At 16.41 their patience was rewarded by the dramatic entrance of the first wave of riders who immediately started a brief but rapid circuit of Huningue,  Just a quarter of an hour later they were back with a vengeance, driven mercilessly by the the Swiss EKZ Racing Team who led the peloton in the final kilometer.

Competition was fierce, but it was Caleb Ewan who ultimately took first place, supported throughout the afternoon by his loyal Australia U23 teammates.  Morgan Lamoisson (Europcar) came in second, followed by Marcel Meisen (BKCP Powerplus).  The highest placed Swiss rider this time was Olivier Hofstetter of Team Leopard-Trek, with Dominik Fuchs in eighth position in the GC.

Stage 1 winner Maxim Pokidov won the km68 sprint and retains the lead in the General Classification.  It will be interesting to see what happens in tomorrow’s stage from Strasbourg to Bischoffsheim.  Another win for Caleb Ewan, or will it be payday Friday?

The first stage of this year’s Tour Alsace was won by Maxim Pokidov of the Russian team Itera-Katusha.  The flat stage began at the Ecomusee and finished with a ten lap circuit of nearby Sausheim on the outskirts of Mulhouse.

Pokidov was part of a group of eight riders which formed around an hour into the race and built up a substantial lead of 4 minutes over the peloton, which was then reduced to just over a minute at the finish.  Anthony Perez (Team Aix-en-Provence) took second place and was followed over the line by Nicolas David (Team Brest Iroise).  The highest placed Swiss rider was Dominic Fuchs of EKZ Racing Team who came seventh.

Stage 2 tomorrow is a hillier affair of 157.6 km from Mulhouse to Huningue, with a 40 km flat section at the end which promises to be a treat for the sprinters. I’ve got my eye on rising star Caleb Ewan (Australia U23) who came in ninth today, just behind the leading group.
